Chrome Extension of the Week: “Grammarly”

Extension of the Week:

Originally launched in 2009, Grammarly changed the way that people will type forever.  The Google Chrome extension, Grammarly, is an extension that is able to detect over 250 different grammar issues.  Along with checking for grammar, Grammarly can help to detect spelling errors.  Not that anyone ever would but if someone were to ever plagiarize, Grammarly can detect that as well.  Sometimes when typing a person may spell a word right but use it in the wrong context, and Grammarly will also catch those types of errors.

Wikipedia has even said that,

“In the 2013 Best Online Grammar Checker Comparisons and Reviews, Grammarly won the TopTenReviews Gold Award, with a rating of 8.88”.

Since Grammarly has won these great awards, reviews, and ratings, it only makes sense that Grammarly’s slogan is,

“The World’s Best Grammar Checker”

When a person is writing while using Grammarly, it is very easy to see when an error is detected.  When an error is spotted in a writing, a red line will appear.   Once a red line is placed on the writing, it is fairly simple to find out what is wrong with what has been typed.  All that I person has to do is hover their mouse over the red line.

When hovering over the word, words, or phrase that has an error, Grammarly will tell you the suggestion.  Along with showing what Grammarly thinks is the correct version of what you are trying to say, it will also tell you why.

Unlike other grammar checks like “Spelling and Grammar” check on Microsoft Word, Grammarly helps you to understand why your error is an error.  While Grammarly can be used as an editing tool, which many authors use, it is also a teaching tool.

When a person is constantly getting errors while using other tools, they might just hit “fix all” or something like that and then they are not really learning. Grammarly’s purpose in explaining why something is wrong is so that you can actually learn and grow as a writer. By learning grammar issues that you have, you can greatly improve your writing.  Grammarly will also help you to correct your context errors since it spits those as well with the same red line.

There is now, even more, ways to use Grammarly.  Although Grammarly was primarily created to be a Google Chrome extension, it is now Apple friendly.  Apple’s Safari is now able to have Grammarly added.  With Grammarly added to Safari, any time a person is typing, Grammarly will pop with suggestions for errors.

Apple’s App Store also has a Grammarly app available free to download.  If a person has the Grammarly app on their Apple iPhone or Apple iPad, then they are able to use it anytime they are typing as well.  How Grammarly works on Apple iPhones and iPads is it is a keyboard.  When I person downloads the app, there are just some simple steps to follow:

  1. Open Settings
  2. Go to General
  3. Go to Keyboard
  4. Click on Keyboards
  5. Click Add New Keyboard
  6. Click on Grammarly
  7. Click on Grammarly again
  8. Switch on to Allow Full Access

Now when a person is typing on their Apple iPhone or iPad, all they have to do is click on the Globe icon on the bottom left of their keyboard.  This is the button that easily allows users to access their other keyboards whether it is their Emojis, Bitmojis, Dunkin, Chick Fil A, or any other keyboards including Grammarly.  When a person is typing on their Apple iPhone or iPad with the Grammarly keyboard, they will get all of the same services provided as for when they are typing on their computer on Google Chrome or Apple Safari.

To add the Grammarly grammar check to your computer, it is really simple.  All you need to do is follow a few steps:

  1. Go to
  2. Click Add to (for Safari it will say Add to Safari for Chrome it will say Add to Chrome)
  3. Click Install Now
  4. Create FREE account
  5. Click Continue to Grammarly (This is if you want the free version, if you want to pay $11.66 a month then click Get Grammarly Premium)

That is all! Just those few simple steps will make you never have a grammar error again! Grammarly will not only help you detect errors for your college papers, but will help detect errors for when you are typing an email to your boss, sending your best friend a text, typing on a SnapChat picture to put on your story, or even posting on social media.

Whenever you send an email to a boss or you are typing up your resume for your new dream job, you never have to worry about not getting it because of having grammar, spelling, or context errors.  Grammarly can help you get the job of your dreams or make you seem very intelligent in an email to your boss.  You can even seem like a “smarty pants” when you are sending a Tweet or posting a long post on Facebook about politics or anything else you are posting about for all of your friends and followers to see.

The rating I would give this Google Chrome Extension would definitely be:

The only reason that I gave this Google Chrome Extension an 8 and not a 10 is because I only have the free version. Most people reading this column will be broke college kids and will not have the $11.66 a month to pay for the premium version.  Even though the free version does not catch as many errors as the premium plan, it is still a great and helpful extension to have downloaded.  Whether you download this as a Google Chrome Extension, an Add-On for Apple Safari or as an App and New Keyboard on Apple iPhone and Apple iPad, you will definitely get a lot of use out of using Grammarly.
